Quick Florida Update

10 Jul

I’m down in Florida this weekend visiting my cousin. Still wanting to be in training mode, I brought my gear for a 7 miler around her neighborhood.

Yeah, no. Not gonna happen

8am and it’s already over 80°. 1 mile in and I’m about a third done with my water. 1.5 miles in and I’m a sweatbucket. I decided to end it at 2 miles. It’s in the mid-80s now. Not worth it to continue.

What was worth it: cooling down, stretching and doing some yoga on a dock on St. John’s River, just a few steps from my cousin’s apartment. Hello, bliss.

4 May

Hello there, traffic spike yesterday! Not sure where you all came from, but hello!

This weekend in NYC was… interesting. That whole Times Square bomb scare thing? It happened at 45th and Broadway, and I was hanging around at 46th and Broadway. At first, I thought the police barricades were still up as part of that morning’s Revlon Run/Walk for Women, and I almost crossed over to get to a store I wanted to go to… yeah the police really didn’t like that too much. I took a few photos using my good camera, but in the meantime here’s a photo I took with my cell phone:

The show I was seeing was on 46th, and by the time we got out of there a bit before 11pm, Times Square had been blocked off entirely. At that time, we still had no knowledge about what was going on. It wasn’t until the next morning that I really got all of the details (my phone died while I was in the theatre).

Anyway, we’re fine and the failed bomber has been captured. Jerk.

Although I didn’t get a run in this weekend, I walked at least 8 miles around the city and did an hour of yoga on Sunday evening. This morning was part one of my intervals… hopefully part two will still happen (booo thunderstorms!).

Photos and run stats later today… it’s time to eat!

Weekend Wrapup

25 Apr

I hope you all had a splendid weekend!

To compensate for my increased heart rate, I decided to do a run/walk on Friday afternoon. Using my Garmin’s interval training feature, I went out for a 2:1 10x for a 30 minute run. I ended up going 2.78 miles in 30 minutes… not too shabby since 10 of those minutes were walking! I walk quickly :)

I met with the lulu run group again, and we set out for 4.5 miles… which turned in to 5 miles when we hit the 2.25 point of our out and back and thought “what’s another .25 miles this way?” Oof, my heart went crazy. Maybe it was the pollen, or the fact that my outfit was way too warm for the weather, but a 10+ minute pace was killing me. We made it 3 miles running, but did a 2:1 run/walk for the last two. Our run leader, Pete, was riding a bike since he was still recovering from an awesome Boston, and he decided to take some videos of us huffing and puffing. It’ll be here once he sends it over to me!

Of course, I negated all of that work later that afternoon when I headed over to the Boston Bacon and Beer Festival. Yes. A festival dedicated to local breweries and local restaurants featuring bacon-themed dishes. Vegetarians and vegans beware: I’m about to talk about the wonders of bacon. There were some straaaaange dishes, but I didn’t turn my head away from everything. I mean, they’re free samples… if I didn’t like anything, toss it out. And I could end up loving new things. I tried everything from bacon donuts to the most perfectly-rendered piece of porkbelly to cheddar/bacon biscuits to a chocolate and bacon milkshake! There were even chocolate, ale, and bacon cupcakes:

It was a seriously awesome time. And I felt much better about eating all that bacon since I ran 5 miles beforehand ;)

I planned on getting in a few more miles, but I was pretty wiped from the whole weekend and decided to lay low and only take my evening yoga class. I picked up a Yogitoes skidless towel just before class since I have issues with sliding around. My muscle fatigue became evident near the end of the class when I started shaking in some of the positions. But, something wonderful happened…

…for a few seconds, my right heel was ON THE GROUND in downward dog! Um, hello happiness and goodbye tight hamstrings! I’ve only been taking this class for a few weeks and I already feel like I’ve improved so much.

It’s now 8pm aaaaaand I feel like I’m going to pass out. Dumb pollen!

Enjoy the rest of your nights!

Three Things Thursday

8 Apr

Woah. Yesterday was all kinds of crazy. It hit 90°F in Boston. It’s only April!! Fortunately we’re back to real spring weather today :) Yesterday was also insane here at work. It was way too hot to run, and I was presenting an award at my old college last night. So I haven’t run since Tuesday… my foot is already tapping on the ground in anticipation for tonight! It should be a comfortable mid-50°s run tonight, so I’m hoping to do 3-4 miles before the sun sets.

For the next few days there’s a Yoga Conference happening at the Hynes Convention Center, which is just a few minutes from my office. I can’t afford to do any of the classes ($40 for a 2 hour Friday night session??), but the Expo portion is free to the public. It starts tonight at goes through Sunday. I’m pretty excited to browse around and see what kind of swag I can grab, and if there are any deals from lululemon, Gaiam, or any other interesting brands.

My parents bought me this necklace as an Easter gift (I don’t know why we do gifts, we just do).
It’s much tinier than I thought, but I like it that way. It’s nice and subtle. I plan on adding the 26.2 charm to it once I finish Chicago :)

The Back Bay is absolutely gorgeous right now; flowering trees, bright colors… it kills me a bit to work indoors! But it makes my excursions outside that much sweeter. Spring will finally be sealed to me when the two trees I see when I look straight out my office window sprout their leaves. They’re still pretty bare, keeping me in a bit of winter mode. Hurry up, you dumb trees.

Wrapping Up the Weekend

6 Apr

Yeah yeah yeah it’s Tuesday. But let’s ignore that fact for right now.

This past weekend was B-E-A-UTIFUL. My lululemon running group went out for 4 miles, which ended up being much tougher than I had anticipated. It’s probably because my body wasn’t ready for the warmer weather/deathly pollen, but my pace was yuck. Whatevs, I didn’t sweat it too much. 4 miles is 4 miles, right?

My parents and I finally bought our compost tumbler! We also picked up some raised-bed garden borders, which I’ll hopefully get set up this weekend. I’m still deciding on what to plant… I want to plant so many different things, but I don’t want to get overwhelmed in my first year doing this. I’m thinking lettuce, peppers, carrots, onions, leeks, celery and radishes. It’s getting late in the planting season, so I’ll probably have to buy seedlings instead of seeds. Bah.

On Sunday I didn’t get out for a run since I was busy cooking all morning for Easter. But I did go out for an awesome 8 mile bike ride followed by some OnDemand yoga (boooo gym being closed…). And as much as I wanted to run yesterday, I could feel how tired my body still was and I took a rest day. Not today, though. Gotta get out there.

Smile! Spring has arrived :)
